Job Description

We are seeking a Production Underwriter to drive profitable new business growth for our Small Commercial BOP portfolio. This is a high-visibility role focused on building strong agency relationships, identifying new market opportunities, and contributing to underwriting strategy.

You will underwrite new and renewal business within your assigned territory while proactively engaging with appointed agents to promote our products and appetite. You’ll serve as the face of our underwriting team advising, negotiating, and problem-solving in partnership with our distribution team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Underwriting: Review and assess new and renewal commercial insurance applications to decide which risks the company should insure, ensuring they meet company guidelines and profitability goals.
  • Business Growth: Actively look for new business opportunities within your territory by working closely with insurance agents, promoting the company's products, and supporting their sales efforts.
  • Agency Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong partnerships with independent agents through meetings, training sessions, and ongoing communication to improve submission quality and business results.
  • Collaboration: Work with the distribution team (sales/agents) and product managers to develop and implement strategies to hit production targets and enhance the product offerings.
  • Risk Analysis: Use your knowledge and tools to evaluate risks accurately, recommend appropriate coverage options, pricing, and terms, while maintaining a focus on profitability.
  • Portfolio Management: Monitor how agencies are performing and take steps to improve alignment with underwriting goals.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay current with industry trends, competitor activity, regulations, and company guidelines.
  • Travel: Be prepared to travel up to 30% of the time for agent visits and meetings.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 5 to 7 years of Property & Casualty insurance experience, with at least 3 years specifically in commercial underwriting for Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) or small commercial package business.
  • Proven success in a production underwriting role, including responsibility for driving new business growth, managing agency relationships, and achieving territory premium goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong partnerships with independent agents, including conducting field visits and facilitating business development discussions.
  • Strong technical underwriting acumen with the ability to assess risk, apply pricing strategies, and negotiate terms aligned with profitability targets.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; comfortable leading agency meetings and product training sessions.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent work experience considered, especially when combined with professional designations such as CIC, CPCU, or AU.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); ability to utilize underwriting platforms and reporting tools effectively.
  • Highly organized with excellent time management, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
  • Self-motivated, results-driven, and adaptable demonstrating a “can-do” attitude and strong sense of ownership.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team environment, sharing knowledge, supporting peers, and contributing to a positive, performance-driven culture.
  • Strong business acumen and market awareness to identify opportunities and respond to competitive dynamics.
